About the Games

Welcome to Vietnam
After successfully hosted the 22nd SEA Games in 2003, Vietnam confidently plays the role of the third Asian Indoor Games organizer in 2009. Again, it is determined to excellently host this large scale Games to make it the most memorable sport event with the Asian culture and orriental style.

This is the third time the Asian Indoor Games will take place. The Games is initiated by the Olympic Council of Asia in the spirit of " a booming and developing Asia." Being the playgrounds for indoor sports, the Games always bears the impressive characteristics of the host country. If the X-Games is considered as a breakthrough in the first AIG in Thailand, the spectators will have a chance to watch unique traditional sport performances. The competition program consists of twenty sports, four demonstration sports including the Shuttle Cock and Vovinam martial arts offered by the host. If spectators have ever seen Shuttle Cock competition in the 22nd SEA Games hosted in Vienam in 2003. The third Asian Indoor Games will bring about the chance for Vovinam - a Vietnamese martial art branch - to show itself in an international arena. Even though Vietnamese martial arts does not have many chances as expected to be practised in international arena, Vietnam can be proud of its traditional martial arts that accumulate the best historical and cultural characteristics. Among them, Vietvodao Vovinam has been selected to be invested and internationalized.

At the third Asian Indoor Games, spectators can themselves differentiate the two Thai sports: Muay Thai and Kickboxing. Since Kickboxing is originated from Muay Thai, many have been confused by their similar characteristics. If Thailand is the cradle of Muay Thai, Kickboxing seems to be best developed in western Asia and other countries. Their common characteristic is the intensive fighting practised solely by male players.

The traditional Asian sports cannot be mentioned without talking about a sport that may be defined as a cultural performance by many people - the Dragon and Lion Dances. Originated in China, Dragon and Lion dances are practised in many countries including Vietnam. This is a folklore activity which is frequently seen in traditional festivals in Mid Autumn and lunar new year.

Once the traditional culture picture in the AIG3 is drawn, the two strange sport names: Kabaddi and Kurash should also be marked somewhere. Kabaddi has ever been included in many Asian Games (the ASIAD) and popularly practised in South Asian countries like India, Pakistan...while Kurash is a famous wrestling branch in central Asia aging over 3500 years.

In some certain extents, the Asian Indoor Games deserves the description of the wonderful event that honours and popularizes the cultures from different Asian regions. Wait and witness those atractively breath-taking competition with your naked eyes! Spectators will see that Bowing competition becomes more interesting when it is indoor conducted or the track and field competition area is considerably down sized...

All of those wonderfull things will come together with the third Asian Indoor Games which is for the first time hosted in Vietnam!
